With the reunification of the city and the decision
to restore Berlin as Germany's capital and thus the seat of government,

of public transport in the city, an integrated element of the local
transport system in the region.

The continuous rise of passenger numbers from 246
million five years ago to over 290 million (2000), as well as the average
punctuality rate of 97.7 per cent in the year 2000 - despite numerous
construction sites in the network - are clear evidence of the professional,
customer-oriented work of the staff day after day. These figures also
show that S-Bahn Berlin GmbH is on the right track.

After decades of stagnation, billions are being invested
to restore the train stations to their former glory. Particularly the
important interchanges at Alexanderplatz and Friedrichstrasse, as well
as Potsdamer Platz and Lehrter Stadtbahnhof, have again become centres
of metropolitan life with the arrival of hotels, industry, trade and
shopping arcades.
